When the days get longer, the temperature gets warmer, and the flowers start to bloom, it can only mean one thing: summer is coming! As nature works its magic, making everything seem brighter and more beautiful, it's time for your bedroom to get a makeover, too.
Your bedroom is where you'll spend most of your time, and hot weather can make it harder to sleep. Making sure your sleep space is as welcoming and soothing as possible is very important during the summer season! As such, we've come up with some quick and easy ways to make sure that your bedroom is ready for the summer months, so read on!
How to freshen up your bedroom for summer
1. Swap for lighter bedding
Cold weather means thick bedding to cosy up in, but the warmer days and nights of summer require something a little lighter. For spring and summer, replace your winter duvet with a lighter tog duvet. This will have less material, which makes it lighter and more breathable, making it a more comfortable sleep in hot temperatures.
If you find that a duvet is still too warm, then opt for a flat sheet instead. This is similar to what you'll find in warmer countries, such as Spain or Greece. It'll still keep you covered at night, but it is much lighter and comfier when it gets too hot. Make sure to store your bedding properly by checking out our guide to ensure it's fresh and ready when you need it again.
2. Add some plants
Summer is all about nature, whether it's the green of the trees, the colourful flowers or the shimmering blue of the sea. So, why not bring some of nature into your bedroom? Not only will it bring your bedroom to life, literally, but there are also lots of plants that have plenty of great sleep benefits!
To add some colour, go for lavender or jasmine; snake plants and English Ivy are long-lasting and add visual appeal without clashing with your colour scheme. Our blog on the best plants for your bedroom explains the different plants that not only add a botanical twist but also help you sleep better.
3. Incorporate lighter colours
We're not recommending a full bedroom revamp with new wallpaper or painted walls, but there are plenty of ways to incorporate a lighter colour scheme that reflects the bright, airy feel of summer. The colours you use depend on the rest of your bedroom, but shades of yellow, orange, light pink, and green will help create a more summery aesthetic!
Easy ways to add temporary pops of colour are buying new bedding or cushions, fake plants, new artwork or even a new rug. Match these with neutral shades like off-whites, light beiges, taupes, and more.
4. Do a bedroom clear-out
Whilst clutter can make a bedroom feel warmer and cosier in the winter, summer should be all about clean spaces. Go through your wardrobe and decide what you're keeping and what can go. If it's still in good condition, put it in a donate pile; if not, throw it away.
It's not just your wardrobe, though; clear out your bookcases, bedside tables, and any other areas that can fill up with items you never use. Not only will your bedroom feel cleaner, but you'll also have more room to store new items!
5. Introduce a new scent
Winter-time scents are all about adding to that cosy feel, so you'll usually find they're pretty heavy and rely on deeper woods or classic winter smells like cinnamon. For summer, though, we want to make our bedrooms feel as light and welcoming as possible, so lighter scents are a much better choice.
Crisp citrus scents such as orange, lemon, and bergamot bring a clean smell, whilst coconut, sea salt and aquatic scents can bring the scent of the beach to your bedroom! Light floral scents can also work here, such as lavender, jasmine, and rose. Candles are always a good option for an even scent, but on warmer days, we'd recommend something a little less heat-heavy, like a diffuser, an automatic air freshener, or a plug-in air freshener!
6. Refresh old furniture
If you have the money and time, you could give your bedroom a fresh look by changing your furniture. Whether it's swapping a broken bedside table, investing in an on-trend rattan bed, or giving your sleep some love with a new mattress, there are plenty of ways to add some life into your bedroom for summer.
If you don't have the budget to splurge on new furniture, then you could give old furniture a new lease of life by painting it.
